A total of 307 passengers of a Saudi airplane escaped a close call as it caught fire immediately after landing at Zia international airport Tuesday, reports UNB.
All passengers were "safely evacuated", airport officials said. But, scores had cuts and bruises while jostling out through the emergency doors.
The 747 Boeing carrying passengers from Medina and Jeddah landed at the airport in Dhaka at 2:45pm (local time). Immediately after landing, the third engine of the aircraft caught fire on the runway.
Finding the engine afire, the pilot of the plane shut down all engines immediately and saved the passengers from any major accident, the airport sources said.
Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the scene and doused the flames immediately.
The passengers panicked as the aircraft suddenly stuck on the runway. They were asking the Saudi airliner''s crew about the reason for sudden stoppage of the plane.
"But they did not reply to our query except just saying ''sit down on your seat''," said Wahiduzzaman, one of the passengers of the plane.
Most of the passengers are expatriate Bangladeshis working in Saudi Arabia. They were returning home.
Wahiduzzaman said as the plane landed, they saw curly smokes emitting from an engine. "We started screaming: stop the plane and open the doors. But the doors were not opened immediately. After a hue and cry, the emergency doors were opened allowing us to get down."
Another passenger, Shahabuddin, said scores of passengers, particularly children and women, were hurt during the scrambles for getting out of plane. Many passengers lost their passports, cell phones and money, he said.
One airport official said the engine was badly damaged but could not say the exact reason for the fire until investigation. He said as the third engine caught fire, the pilot shut down all the engines and opened the emergency doors, thus averting any major accident.
Civil Aviation sources said that a committee for inquiring into the matter would be formed as "same thing was done in past times as well".
The manager of Saudi Airlines in Bangladesh could not be connected after repeated attempts.

Saudi Arabian Airlines sollte mal wirklich was fuer ihre veraltete Flotte tuen.
Es ist nicht das erste mal das eines ihrere Flugeraete Feuer faengt, das kommt fuer eine solch kleine Flotte zu oft vor.
Nur gut das sie die md 90 durch A 320 ersetzen werden.
